Troubleshooting Telepathy

Start with the smallest relevant fix. Avoid clearing all browser data unless the steps below specifically point to stored state.
The panel says no video was found
- Start the video manually and keep it visible.
- Create or join a room. On a site without a dedicated integration, accept Chrome's one-time all-sites prompt if you want Telepathy to cover ordinary pages and permitted embedded frames automatically.
- Wait a few seconds while the automatic scan checks late-loading players.
- If the player still is not found, select Re-detect player once.
- If the extension was installed or updated while this tab was already open, reload the watched page.
Some custom, sandboxed or DRM players do not expose a controllable video element. Check the support matrix before repeating the same steps.
Play or pause does not start for a friend
Chrome and video sites can block programmatic playback until that person interacts with the page. Ask them to click the video once, then retry the room action. Each viewer must also be signed in to the video provider and entitled to play the same title.
Viewers are on different episodes or pages
Playback time alone cannot prove that everybody opened the same media. Leave the incorrect room, open the host's invite link again, confirm the title/episode manually, and rejoin. Telepathy does not bypass regional catalogs or account restrictions.
A room link says “room not found”
Rooms are temporary and may expire after all participants leave or following service maintenance. Ask the host for a new invite. Treat invite links as private and share them only with intended participants.
Playback drifts or jumps
- Pause briefly and let every player finish buffering.
- Confirm only one relevant video is playing in the tab.
- Close duplicate Telepathy panels or duplicate room tabs.
- On YouTube or Netflix, reload if the site navigated between titles without rebuilding its player cleanly.
- High latency, throttled background tabs and player ads can delay an apply; no fixed millisecond guarantee is made.
The panel disconnected
Keep the side panel open while participating. Telepathy retries brief interruptions automatically. If reconnection does not restore the room, create a new room.
Ad skipping changed the page
Ad skipping is optional and off by default. Turn it off in Telepathy, then reload the page if the site does not restore itself. The feature applies network and cosmetic heuristics and can produce false positives on unfamiliar sites. It does not promise removal of every ad.
Chrome permission was denied
Create or join a room again to retry the optional prompt, or open chrome://extensions, choose Telepathy → Details → Site access, and select the access level you want. Once all-sites access is accepted, it persists until you remove it; protected Chrome pages and the Chrome Web Store still cannot be controlled by content scripts.
